Her collapsed canvas flotation screen still hangs in folds around her hull from the D-Day landing, kit is lashed around her turret and her gun points towards a wrecked Horsa in the background, its invasion stripes and \u003ca title=\"RAF Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-air-force-photo-prints\"\u003eRAF\u003c\/a\u003e roundel clear against the grey sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe 13th\/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own) were formed in 1922 from two of the Army’s oldest cavalry regiments. On D-Day the regiment led the assault on Sword Beach in Sherman DD amphibious tanks, launched from landing craft some 5,000 yards out in heavy seas to swim ashore with the first wave of the 3rd Infantry Division and support the commandos fighting through Ouistreham. In the days that followed, a squadron crossed the Orne to support the 6th Airborne Division holding the bridgehead around Ranville and Bréville, and the regiment fought on through North West Europe with the 8th Armoured Brigade.
