One leans in at the sight, while the other bends low with his head down, both bareheaded in body armour. Smoke rolls across the pit and hangs over stacked bomb containers on the left, and an ammunition box sits on the gravel at the far edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe British had been at Kajaki since 2006, holding hilltop positions above the dam. The ground around them was still scattered with mines from the Soviet war of the 1980s. In September 2006 Corporal Mark Wright of 3 PARA was killed there going to the aid of wounded comrades caught in an old minefield, and he was awarded the George Cross after his death.
