The nearer tank, marked 19 and named FALKIRK, is seen from her left side with her gun trained to the left, half hidden behind scrub and young trees. A crewman shows at the turret hatch, and tank 20 stands further along the slope, with rolling hills fading into haze beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Battle of San Marino, fought from 17th to 20th September 1944, was led by the 4th Indian Division after German \u003ca title=\"British Army Personnel Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/british-army-personnel-photo-prints\"\u003etroops\u003c\/a\u003e had moved into the neutral republic to hold its roads and high ground. During the fighting, Rifleman Sher Bahadur Thapa of the 1st\/9th Gurkha Rifles held a hilltop position for about two hours to cover the withdrawal of two companies, and was killed trying to rescue a wounded comrade, earning a posthumous Victoria Cross.
