They were among the first of the enhanced Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) fleet to go into service. The leading Scimitar fills the right of the frame, almost head-on, wrapped in slat armour, with its long 30mm cannon pointing away to the right. Its commander, in helmet and dark glasses, sits up in the turret, and the driver looks out from his hatch below. The second vehicle follows behind on the left, with a crewman standing in the turret, dust rising behind it and a small flag on its aerial against a clear blue sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Lancers’ main task in Helmand was to watch over the ground on either side of Highways 1 and 611, the two main supply routes through the Task Force Helmand area. The Scimitar Mk 2 was rebuilt for that work through an urgent operational requirement worth around £30 million. It was given a new hull to give better protection against mines, extra armour against blast and bullets, and blast-protected seats for every crewman. The 9th\/12th Royal Lancers were formed in 1960 from the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers and the 12th Royal Lancers.
