The AVRE replaced the tank’s gun with the 290mm Petard, which threw a 40lb demolition bomb, known to its crews as the flying dustbin, up to about 80 yards to smash pillboxes, sea walls and concrete obstacles. Crewed by the Royal Engineers, AVREs could also carry fascines, small box girder bridges and carpet-laying bobbins, and Churchill AVREs remained in service after the war until they were replaced by
