The Crusader, her left side to the camera, carries pennants on her aerial and a camouflage net rolled along her hull, with two of her crew in the turret and another sitting on the front, while flames lick around the Panzer’s running gear and a towering column of black smoke drifts across the pale sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eOperation Crusader opened on 18th November 1941 and became one of the hardest-fought tank battles of the desert war, with the armour of both sides heavily engaged around Sidi Rezegh as the Eighth Army fought to break through to the garrison of Tobruk, which had been besieged since April. After weeks of confused and costly fighting, Rommel was forced to lift the siege in early December and fall back to El Agheila, giving the British their first victory over German ground forces in the desert.
