Only her tracks, road wheels and the kit strapped to her hull give her away, with a camouflage net slung along her left side, a drum and a steel helmet hung at her rear and a distant \u003ca title=\"British Army Vehicles Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/british-army-vehicle-photo-prints\"\u003evehicle\u003c\/a\u003e on the flat horizon under a bright, hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Sunshield was first sketched by General Sir Archibald Wavell in 1941 and developed by the Middle East Command Camouflage Directorate under Geoffrey Barkas. It came in two hinged halves that two men could fit or remove in a few minutes. In the weeks before the Second Battle of El Alamein, Operation Bertram used Sunshields to hide Montgomery’s tanks as harmless supply lorries in the north, while dummy tanks, guns and even a dummy pipeline suggested an attack in the south. The deception achieved complete surprise when the battle opened on 23rd October 1942, and Churchill praised it in the House of Commons when he announced the victory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp
