Seen from the left rear quarter, it sits on hard, stony ground beside a high mud wall, with a gunner up at the roof-mounted machine gun at the front and two more crew in desert helmets and body armour behind him, one pointing out across the ground beside a second, lighter machine gun. Tall antennas, smoke grenade dischargers on the rear corners, jerry cans and kit bags along the side and a large dark V marking on the door all show clearly in the hard, bright light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Jackal was designed to replace the Land Rover WMIK, which had given British patrols firepower but little protection or mobility over Helmand’s rough ground. Built on a purpose-made chassis with air suspension that can raise or lower the ride height, it carried a crew of three and could cross open desert at speed while carrying heavy weapons. It went into action for the first time in Helmand in April 2008, only days after this photograph, and was followed by the better-protected Jackal 2 the next year.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp
