The door of the armoured box on her flank is open to show the engine that drove the flail, and three \u003ca title=\"British Army Personnel Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/british-army-personnel-photo-prints\"\u003esoldiers\u003c\/a\u003e are at work around her: a commander in a beret in the turret hatch, another in a sun helmet beside the turret, and a third at the rotor drum. A lorry and tall wireless aerials stand behind under a sky of fair-weather cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Scorpion was devised in mid-1942 by Captain Norman Berry of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, who fitted a Matilda infantry tank with a rotating drum of chains to beat a path through minefields. A single 30hp Bedford engine in an armoured box on the side of the hull drove the rotor. Thirty-two Scorpions went into action with 42nd and 44th Royal Tank Regiments at the Second Battle of El Alamein, which was still being fought on the day this photo was taken.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp
