Seen from behind with her left side showing, she carries kit and ammunition boxes under a tarpaulin on her engine deck, while men in steel helmets and a crewman in a beret look back at the camera from the open hull where her turret once was.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Kangaroo was born in Normandy in August 1944, when Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds had the guns removed from self-propelled guns, and then turrets removed from Canadian-built Ram tanks, so that infantry could ride into battle under armour. The idea worked so well that two Kangaroo regiments were formed under the 79th Armoured Division, the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment and the British 49th Armoured Personnel Carrier Regiment, converted from the 49th Royal Tank Regiment. In Operation Guildford on 3rd December 1944, the 49th’s Kangaroos carried the infantry of the 15th (Scottish) Division’s 44th Brigade through gaps cleared by flail tanks to take Blerick, and Kangaroos
