Facing the camera with her long 17-pounder gun swung out to one side, she wears camouflage netting and hessian over her turret and hull, spare road wheels and track links are stowed across her front, three of her crew in black berets sit up on the turret and her driver peers out from his hatch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Firefly was a British conversion of the American Sherman, fitted with the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun, and it was the only \u003ca title=\"British Army Vehicle Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/british-army-vehicle-photo-prints\"\u003etank\u003c\/a\u003e in British service in 1944 that could reliably knock out a Tiger or Panther at normal fighting ranges. When the Germans launched their surprise offensive in the Ardennes on 16th December 1944, aiming for the Meuse crossings and Antwerp, Montgomery rushed British armour of XXX Corps south to hold the river line at Namur, Dinant and Givet behind the hard-pressed Americans. The German spearheads were stopped short of the Meuse near Dinant on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and Allied counter-attacks had driven them back by the end of January
