Her whole flight deck runs from bow to stern down the frame, with the angled deck, the numbered landing spots from 1 to 7 and the island along her starboard side all clearly marked. Aircraft are parked forward, beside the island and around the stern. Among them, according to the caption, are two lighter-painted US Navy F-4J Phantom IIs from Independence, sharing the deck with her own aircraft. Steam trails from a catapult at the bow, and smoke from her funnel drifts away across the dark, wind-flecked sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eArk Royal and Independence were operating together as Task Force 401 in the NATO exercise Royal Knight in the North Atlantic. Cross-deck operations like this, with American jets landing on a British carrier and British aircraft using an American one, were only possible with Ark Royal because of her 1967 to 1970 rebuild. That refit gave her a fully angled deck, stronger catapults and heavier arrester gear, making her the only carrier outside the United States Navy able to operate the Phantom.
