A long curving wake trails behind her, and smoke drifts from her funnel. Her twin gun turret is on the forecastle, with her bridge, mast and radar aerial behind it. Behind her, the long steel truss bridge across the Cooper River stands on tall concrete piers above the grey water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAurora was built by John Brown at Clydebank, launched on 28 November 1962 and commissioned on 9 April 1964, when she became leader of the 2nd Frigate Squadron. At the time of this photograph she was serving with NATO’s Standing Naval Force Atlantic, the permanent multinational squadron of allied escorts. Between 1974 and 1976 she was rebuilt at Chatham to carry the Ikara anti-submarine missile. She later took part in the Armilla Patrol in the Gulf in 1982 and a deployment to the Far East, Australia and New Zealand in 1983.
