Her two funnels and tall tripod foremast stand out against an overcast sky, with flags flying at both mastheads, a small boat close off her bow and a low wooded shoreline behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eOne of the Carlisle group of the C Class, she was launched by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead in June 1918 and finished at Pembroke Dock, finally commissioning in February 1922. Between the wars she served in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, on the America and West Indies Station at Bermuda, where she rescued survivors of the \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Sloops Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-sloop-photo-prints\"\u003esloop\u003c\/a\u003e HMS Valerian after a hurricane in 1926, and with the Eastern Fleet. In April 1941 she was torpedoed by an Italian motor torpedo boat off Massawa with the loss of seven men, and after a year under repair at Bombay she went on to serve as a depot ship at the Mulberry harbour off Normandy in June 1944.
