Twin gun mounts are visible forward of her bridge, radar aerials crown both masts, a sailor stands on her forecastle and a small craft lies alongside her stern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eName ship of the Carlisle group, she was rebuilt between 1939 and 1940 with eight 4 inch guns and Type 280 radar, said to be the first \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Warships Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-warship-photo-prints\"\u003ewarship\u003c\/a\u003e fitted with radar for anti-aircraft fire control. She covered a troop convoy to Åndalsnes in Norway, helped evacuate Berbera in August 1940, and lost her captain, Thomas Hampton, when she was hit by bombs off Crete in May 1941, later picking up survivors of the SS Thistlegorm. In July 1943 she escorted the support force for the Sicily landings, and three months later German Ju 87s sank the \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Destroyers Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-destroyer-photo-prints\"\u003edestroyer\u003c\/a\u003e HMS Panther alongside her in the Aegean and left Carlisle too badly damaged
