About a dozen of her crew stand along the casing and on the bridge, several in white jumpers, while one kneels near the after end. A tall mast carries a wide spread of aerial wires above her, and two tall ventilators with ball tops rise from the forward casing. The original postcard lettering, “H.M. Submarine D1”, runs along the bottom edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eD1 was the prototype of the D Class. She was built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness, launched in secret on 16 May 1908 and commissioned in September 1909. She was the Royal Navy’s first long-range diesel-powered submarine, and had twin screws and saddle tanks, a big step on from the petrol-engined boats before her. In the 1910 fleet manoeuvres she “torpedoed” two \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Cruisers Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-cruisers-photo-prints\"\u003ecruisers\u003c\/a\u003e of the opposing fleet off Colonsay, showing that submarines could now operate far from their home base. She was deliberately sunk as a target near Dartmouth on 23 October 1918, and her wreck now lies upright and largely intact on the seabed, protected by law.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eYou
