A light guardrail runs forward along the casing, and a handful of her crew, mostly in white tops, stand on the bridge and on the deck just aft of it. A chequered buoy floats off her bow on the left, and the horizon fades into a soft, hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eD8 was launched on 23 September 1911 and commissioned on 23 March 1912. She was one of the later D Class boats, whose diesel engines and greater range let British submarines patrol well out into the North Sea. She went to war straight away, taking part with her sisters D2 and D3 in the Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August 1914, the first major naval action of the First World War.
