Her commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander David de Beauvoir Stocks, stands on the casing beside the deck gun mounted forward of her conning tower. The White Ensign flies above the bridge, and her weathered, salt-streaked hull shows the wear of hard service. Water churns along her side, and behind her a transport ship lies at anchor beneath a line of low hills.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eE2 was built at Chatham Dockyard, where she was laid down as D10 and launched on 23 November 1912 as one of the first E Class boats. She was based at Harwich when war broke out in 1914 and was later sent to the Dardanelles. As built, the early E Class boats had no deck gun, so those sent to the Dardanelles had one fitted at Malta. E2 put hers to good use in the Sea of Marmara, where on 14 August 1915 she sank the Turkish minelayer Samsun near Erdek.
