Her crew are out on deck, a group in white jumpers and caps gathered by the canvas-screened conning tower and three more standing forward by the lifebuoys on the guardrail. Behind her, a long line of railway wagons stands along the quay in front of industrial buildings, a tall chimney and a tower topped with a small cupola.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eE3 was built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness, launched on 29 October 1912 and commissioned on 29 May 1914. The E Class were the best submarines the Royal Navy had at the start of the First World War, with greater endurance and better internal subdivision than any British boat before them. E3’s war was brief. On 18 October 1914, while patrolling off the German coast, she was torpedoed by U-27 north of the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog. It was the first time one submarine had ever sunk another, and all 31 of her crew were lost.
