Her two funnels, the forward one with a pale band, her forward guns and bridge stand out in plain dark grey against a white sky, with signal flags at her mast and an ensign at her stern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eBuilt by Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn and commissioned in September 1934, she served with the 5th Destroyer Flotilla, went to the Mediterranean during the Abyssinian crisis and patrolled Spanish waters during the Civil War. On the first day of the Second World War she helped rescue survivors of the torpedoed liner Athenia, in May 1941 she picked up the only three survivors of HMS Hood, and that December she rescued 571 men from HMS Repulse off Kuantan. She was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea on 27th February 1942, when only about 54 of her 173 men were saved, picked up by the American \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Submarines Photo prints\"
