Men stand on her forecastle and around her forward gun, smoke drifts back across warehouses and a tall chimney on the shore, and the bow of a small harbour craft edges into the foreground on the left.

Built by John Brown at Clydebank and commissioned in April 1935, she patrolled Spanish waters during the Civil War and in September 1939 shared in the sinking of U-27 with three of her sisters. After service off Norway and with Force H at Dakar and on the Malta convoys, she was badly shaken by a near miss in May 1941 that ruptured her hull and bent her propeller shafts, and she spent months under repair at Chatham. Converted for anti-submarine work between February and May 1943, she was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy on 31st May 1943 as HMCS Saskatchewan, keeping her pennant number. She escorted North Atlantic convoys, helped sink a German patrol boat off Brest in July 1944, and after carrying Canadian troops home at the end of the war she was paid off in 1946 and scrapped.

You can read more about the history of HMS Fortune <a
