Both of her funnels carry dark bands and a thin trail of smoke rises from the forward one, with a jack at her bow, gear rigged at her stern and a ruffled dark sea in the foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eBuilt by Thornycroft at Woolston, near Southampton, she was commissioned in January 1936 and served as the trial ship for the new quintuple torpedo tube mountings, before patrolling Spanish waters during the Civil War and serving with the Mediterranean Fleet. On 8th April 1940, off Norway in heavy weather, she ran into two German destroyers and then the heavy \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Cruisers Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-cruisers-photo-prints\"\u003ecruiser\u003c\/a\u003e Admiral Hipper; badly damaged and outgunned, she turned and rammed the cruiser, tearing away her own bow before her boilers blew up. Only forty of her men were picked up, and her captain, Lieutenant Commander Gerard Roope, drowned while being hauled aboard Hipper. On the recommendation of Hipper’s own captain, Roope was awarded the Victoria Cross, the first VC of the Second World War, gazetted in July 1945.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eYou can read
