Behind her a small wooded island crowned with fortifications rises from the anchorage, with a long shoreline stretching away on either side under a grey, broken sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eBuilt by Vickers-Armstrongs at Barrow and completed in 1936, she played a quiet but important part in the Norwegian campaign when, on 26th April 1940, she and HMS Acheron seized the German trawler Schiff 26, disguised as the Dutch Polares, and recovered code documents that helped Bletchley Park make its first break into naval Enigma traffic. In the Mediterranean she fought at Cape Matapan, rescued about 300 men from the bombed troopship Pennland and 50 more from the destroyers Diamond and Wryneck off Greece, and lifted 720 troops from Souda Bay during the evacuation of Crete. Converted to an escort destroyer, she was handed to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 as HMCS Ottawa, sharing in the sinking of U-678, U-621 and U-984 in the summer of 1944 before being paid off in
