Right forward on the deck, a Gannet stands with its wings folded upright and its twin propellers facing the camera, beside a folded jet and a \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Helicopters Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-helicopter-photo-prints\"\u003ehelicopter\u003c\/a\u003e. One of her flight deck crew stands alone near the edge. Her island rises on the left, topped by the great round dish of her radar, with a signal flag flying from the masthead. The photograph was taken during joint operations with her sister HMS Centaur (R06) and the American carriers USS Forrestal (CVA-59) and USS Enterprise (CVAN-65).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHermes was laid down at Barrow in 1944 as HMS Elephant. Work stopped at the end of the war, and she was not launched until 16 February 1953. She was commissioned in November 1959 as a modern strike carrier. In October 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, her Sea Vixen crews were briefed with real strike targets and held at readiness for three days. She later served as a commando carrier, an anti-submarine carrier and, with a ski jump fitted, the flagship of the Falklands task force in 1982.
