She is seen from off her port bow, with the number 03 painted large on her pale hull and her lattice radar mast rising above the island, while a tug trails smoke to the right, the crane-fitted vessel Bushwood lies off to the left and gulls wheel under a grey, overcast sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eShe was laid down at Tacoma, Washington, in January 1943 as the American escort carrier Niantic, and was handed to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease on 8th November 1943, the same day she was commissioned. During 1944 she ferried \u003ca title=\"Royal Navy Aircraft Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-navy-aircraft-photo-prints\"\u003eaircraft\u003c\/a\u003e as far as India and later served as a deck landing training carrier in the Firth of Forth. After the Japanese surrender she was converted to carry troops, and she made several voyages bringing servicemen home from the Far East. She was returned to the US Navy at Norfolk, Virginia, on 21st November 1946 and later sailed as the Dutch merchant ship Friesland.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThis print is ideal for
