Behind her, a tug makes smoke on the left of the picture and the cranes, chimneys and buildings of the riverside stand under a dull, overcast sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eShe was built by Hawthorn Leslie on the Tyne, launched in July 1944 and named after the Royal Navy’s victory over the French at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782; she remains the only ship of the name. She served for much of the 1950s as leader of the 3rd Destroyer Squadron in the Mediterranean, and in March 1954 she went to the aid of the burning troopship Empire Windrush, which later sank under tow. Paid off in 1962, she spent her last years at Rosyth as a training ship for artificer apprentices before being broken up at Cairnryan in 1972.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eYou can read
