It flew the \u003ca title=\"The story of the Harrier\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/blogs\/british-military-aircraft-and-vehicles-guide\/straight-up-a-history-of-the-harrier-jump-jet\"\u003eHarrier\u003c\/a\u003e for four decades, from the first GR1s in Germany in 1970 until the type was retired in 2010. As part of Joint Force Harrier it took its turn at Kandahar, where the jets were kept on standby to support troops on the ground.
