In this upright frame every jet points to the left of the picture. The aircraft are evenly spaced, with each red airframe, white-edged canopy and Union Flag fin standing out sharply against the plain, deep blue water below. No smoke is being flown, so the shape of the formation and of each Hawk shows clearly from above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe team was formed in 1964 and flew its first public season in 1965 with the Folland Gnat. It grew to nine display aircraft in 1968 and changed to the BAE Systems Hawk for the 1980 season. The Diamond Nine is the formation most closely tied to the team.
