The chase jet is above them, so both are seen from the top as they head towards the lower right of the frame, roundels on their upper wings and their crews visible through the canopies. Wisps of cloud drift across the left of the picture. Far below lie dark farmland, a belt of woodland and a road running diagonally between the fields.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eSeen from above, the difference in design between the two jets is clear. The Gnat’s swept wing is mounted high on the fuselage and droops down towards the tips. The Hawk’s wing is mounted low, beneath the cockpit. The Hawk was also cheaper to run and simpler to maintain than the Gnat, one of the reasons the \u003ca title=\"RAF Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-air-force-photo-prints\"\u003eRAF\u003c\/a\u003e chose it as the older jet’s replacement in training and with the \u003ca title=\"RAF Red
