They are preparing the jets overnight for the next day’s displays at Folkestone and Eastbourne. The camera is set low under the wing and fuselage, looking up past the roundel, the “Royal Air Force” lettering and a “Danger Hot Air” stencil towards the canopy, against a deep blue night sky. A slow shutter has blurred the two figures as they move: one in blue overalls is bending under the aircraft, and the other is crouched at the right beside a metal can. More Hawks, a fuel bowser and the lights of the airport fill the background. The photograph won second place in its section of the \u003ca title=\"RAF Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-air-force-photo-prints\"\u003eRAF\u003c\/a\u003e Photographic Competition 2023.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe aircraft are only half of what puts on a Red Arrows show. Among the engineers known as the Circus are the technicians who fly in the back seats of the Hawks when the team goes on tour, so that each jet arrives with its own engineer. On arrival they refuel the jets and refill the dye and diesel for the smoke.
