With bright, soft cloud behind them, the jets appear as dark silhouettes. Their nine parallel smoke trails stretch back across the picture and cut through a broad band of older smoke left by an earlier pass. Where the two sets of trails cross, they form a lattice in shades of grey and pale amber. The flight took place on the day the team set out its plans for the sixtieth display season.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Red Arrows began in 1964 as part of the Central Flying School. Their name was a nod to two earlier \u003ca title=\"RAF Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-air-force-photo-prints\"\u003eRAF\u003c\/a\u003e teams, the Black Arrows of 111 Squadron and the Yellowjacks. The team flew seven aircraft in its first seasons and grew to nine in 1968, which made the Diamond Nine possible.
