The aircraft sits side-on on the gravel with its nose to the left and both rotors turning in a blur above their upright nacelles, a warning light glowing on one engine, while the troops file towards its rear in helmets and full packs with a military working dog among them. Rows of stacked containers and a few lights line the horizon under a pale blue sky. The joint UK, US and Afghan operation pushed into the open desert south of the airfield and found and destroyed a large cache of insurgent bomb-making equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft. Its engines and rotors sit in nacelles at the wingtips that swing upright for take-off and landing, as seen here, then tilt forward so it can fly like a conventional aircraft, with far more speed and range than a \u003ca title=\"RAF Helicopter Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/raf-helicopter-photo-prints\"\u003ehelicopter\u003c\/a\u003e. The US Marine Corps first took it to war in Iraq in 2007 and brought it to Helmand from late 2009. On this tour II Squadron served under 3 \u003ca title=\"RAF Photo prints\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshireprints.co.uk\/collections\/royal-air-force-photo-prints\"\u003eRAF\u003c\/a\u003e Force
