The jet is seen side-on from her starboard side, with her nose light shining, a helmeted pilot under the closed canopy, a roundel on the fuselage, and a red, white and blue flash on her dark blue fin. Bare trees fade into the grey mist behind the airfield, and a blurred runway light stands in the foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Gnat was designed at Folland by W.E.W. Petter, who had earlier designed the Canberra and the first Lightning. He conceived it as a small, light and inexpensive fighter at a time when fighters were growing ever larger. India and Finland bought the single-seat fighter, and India went on to build its own development, the Ajeet.
