Ajax and Achilles, with HMS Exeter, fought the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939 and drove her into Montevideo, where she was scuttled. Neptune was lost in a minefield off Tripoli in December 1941 with all but one of her ship’s company, and Achilles went on to serve the Royal New Zealand Navy and then the Indian Navy as INS Delhi.
