HMS Exeter 68 York Class Heavy Cruiser 14 February 1940 Photo Print
HMS Exeter (68), a Royal Navy York Class heavy cruiser, comes slowly alongside at Plymouth in February 1940, home from the Battle of the River Plate, with her ship's company lining the rails along her starboard side. In the foreground a dense crowd of servicemen and civilians packs the quay around a dockside crane and a parked car, while a tug makes smoke astern of the cruiser under a grey, murky sky.
On 13 December 1939 Exeter engaged the German armoured ship Admiral Graf Spee off the River Plate and was hit seven times by 11-inch shells, losing 61 men killed and 23 wounded, with her turrets knocked out and her hull flooded. After emergency repairs at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands she made the long passage home, and Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, came to Plymouth to greet her crew. She then spent over a year under repair and modernisation at Devonport before going out to the Far East, where she was sunk in the Java Sea on 1 March 1942.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
