HMS Southampton D90 Type 42 Destroyer March 1997 Firing 4.5 Inch Gun Photo Print
HMS Southampton (D90), a Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer, fires her 4.5 inch Mk 8 gun on 11 March 1997, photographed from the air ahead of her and looking down the length of her forecastle. Smoke from the barrel rolls out over the water on her port side, spent cases lie on the deck beside the turret and two small red flags fly from her masts. Behind the gun are the Sea Dart launcher, the bridge with a large white radome on its roof and the masts, with only a small bow wave at her stem.
The Type 42 was designed around the Sea Dart area air defence missile, and the single 4.5 inch Mk 8 on the forecastle was her only medium calibre gun. The mounting was fully automatic with no one in the turret itself, the gun's crew working in the gun bay beneath it. It gave her a weapon against surface targets and for naval gunfire support of forces ashore, and regular live shoots like this one kept the gun and the people who ran it worked up.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
