HMS Waveney (1903): Patrolling the Humber Through the First World War

Built at Hebburn-on-Tyne

HMS Waveney was built by Hawthorn Leslie at their Hebburn-on-Tyne shipyard, laid down on 20 October 1902, launched on 16 March 1903 and completed on 1 June 1904, the first Royal Navy ship to carry the name, joining the East Coast Destroyer Flotilla based at Harwich.

A Collision and a Reclassification

Waveney was involved in a collision with HMS Garry off Sandown on 26 July 1907, before transferring to the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla in 1909, and was formally assigned to the E class following an Admiralty reclassification directive in 1912, a designation she carried through into the following year.

Patrols During the Hartlepool Raid

In early 1914, Waveney joined the 9th Destroyer Flotilla at Chatham, conducting anti-submarine and counter-mining patrols in the Firth of Forth. During the German raid on Hartlepool in December 1914, an attack that killed dozens of civilians ashore, Waveney took part in patrol operations at sea and emerged undamaged with no casualties among her own crew.

The Humber Patrol

Following a flotilla merger in 1915, Waveney transferred to the 7th Destroyer Flotilla on the River Humber, where she remained employed on Humber Patrol duties, carrying out counter-mining operations and anti-submarine patrols for the remainder of the war, precisely the kind of steady, unglamorous coastal defence work that occupied so many older destroyers while newer ships took on the more celebrated fleet actions.

Sold for Breaking

HMS Waveney was sold to Thos. W. Ward of Sheffield for breaking at Grays in Essex on 20 February 1920, closing out a career built almost entirely on the quiet, essential coastal patrol work that kept Britain's home waters safer throughout the First World War.
