HMS Westminster (F237): From a Bond Film Set to the Libyan Blockade

Named for a Dukedom

HMS Westminster was launched on 4 February 1992, a Type 23 Duke-class frigate named after the Dukedom of Westminster and the second Royal Navy ship to carry the name, entering service as part of the backbone of the post-Cold War frigate fleet.

Volcanic Relief in Montserrat

In 1995, Westminster responded to the volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, providing emergency relief to a population facing a genuine natural disaster, exactly the kind of humanitarian role that increasingly defined peacetime frigate deployments.

A Supporting Role in a Bond Film

In a rather different kind of appearance, Westminster's interior was used for filming in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, a fun bit of Hollywood glamour for a working warship, before she joined Atlantic Patrol Ship South duties in 1999, relieving HMS Norfolk off Sierra Leone.

New Technology and Ceremonial Honours

Westminster became the first Type 23 frigate fitted with the advanced Merlin helicopter and Sonar 2087 towed array system in 2004, and the following year her crew were granted the Freedom of the City of Westminster in a ceremonial parade, a fitting honour given her name.

Disaster Relief and the Libyan Blockade

In 2008, Westminster deployed to Burma for Cyclone Nargis relief efforts, and in 2011 took part in Operation Ellamy, enforcing the naval blockade during the Libyan civil war. During a Persian Gulf deployment in 2012 to 2013, the ship's company faced the loss of sailor Timothy MacColl, who disappeared while ashore in Dubai, a loss this account records with the sadness it deserves.

A New Missile System and a Final Refit

Westminster returned to service in 2017 following a refit that fitted her with the new Sea Ceptor missile system, and in 2022 fired Harpoon missiles during a SinkEx live-fire exercise.

She entered what was intended to be a further planned refit that October, but the work was suspended in May 2023 due to the ship's poor material condition, and by May 2024 it was confirmed that Westminster would be retired and scrapped, her crew reassigned to future Type 26 frigates, bringing to a close the career of a truly well-travelled and eventful frigate.
