British Army 21 Engineer Regt Bridge Plans October 2012 Photo Print
Sappers of 21 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers, British Army, lay the steel joists of the Golden Egg bridge at Gereshk, in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand, Afghanistan, in October 2012. The engineering drawings for the job lie open in a ring binder on the concrete abutment in the foreground, next to a yellow tape measure. A spirit level rests on the nearest joist, timber spacers are stacked at the left, and a narrow ditch of still water runs beneath the span. Three sappers walk out along the beams in the distance, with reeds, scrub and a line of defensive barriers behind them under a wide blue sky. An Afghan National Army checkpoint overlooks the crossing, which was expected to help local people reach the Sunday market.
Bridging has been part of the Royal Engineers’ work for as long as the Corps has existed, and on operations in Afghanistan it often meant designing crossings around what was available locally. This one used steel joists and wooden spacers, so that Afghan tradesmen could keep it in repair without military equipment. 21 Engineer Regiment was based at Ripon in North Yorkshire at the time and drew most of its soldiers from the North West of England.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
