British Army Sherman Crab Flail Tank April 1944 Photo Print
A British Army Sherman Crab flail tank of the 79th Armoured Division beats a path across a ploughed field under test on 27th April 1944, a fountain of earth flung high into the air by the chains whirling on her rotor. She is seen with her left side to the camera and her turret turned to the rear, away from the flail, as she churns past a deep furrow in the foreground with a dark line of pine trees behind her under a heavy grey sky.
The Crab was a Sherman V tank fitted with a rotating drum of heavy chains carried on arms in front of the hull, which beat the ground ahead of the tank to set off mines and tear through barbed wire. Unlike earlier flail tanks, which needed separate engines, the Crab drove its rotor from the tank’s own engine and kept its 75mm gun, so it could fight as a normal tank once a lane was cleared. Crabs equipped the 30th Armoured Brigade of the 79th Armoured Division, made up of the 22nd Dragoons, the Westminster Dragoons and the 1st Lothians and Border Horse, and they cleared paths through the beach minefields on D-Day, six weeks after this photograph was taken, and in every major assault through to Germany.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
