HMS A3 A Class Submarine 1903 to 1912 Photo Print
HMS A3 (1903), a Royal Navy A Class submarine, runs on the surface with water surging along her low hull. “A3” is painted in large white characters near one end. Several of her crew stand on the casing and the conning tower beside the tall mast, and a wire jackstay runs down from a short post to the deck. A flat shoreline and a small marker sit on the horizon under a heavy grey sky. Along the foot of the image, the original postcard lettering by Cozens of Portsmouth records her loss.
Built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness and launched on 9 May 1903, A3 was one of the A Class boats that developed the early Holland design into Britain’s own submarines. She had a petrol engine for running on the surface, an electric motor for running dived and two bow torpedo tubes. On 2 February 1912 she was carrying out a practice attack on the depot ship HMS Hazard in the eastern Solent when the two vessels collided. A3 sank at once, and all 14 men aboard were lost. She was raised in March 1912 and sunk as a gunnery target by HMS St Vincent off Portland that May. Her wreck has been a protected site since 2016.
This print is ideal for submariners, Royal Navy veterans and anyone with a connection to HMS A3, her crew or the early days of the Submarine Service.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
Your order will be crafted by award-winning framing technicians based in central England, with decades of combined experience. Using the finest FUJI professional photographic papers and premium materials, they ensure exceptional print and frame quality.
Our hand-picked craftsmen and women work with state-of-the-art printing and cutting equipment, yet every frame is still assembled by hand and subject to rigorous quality checks. Their dedication consistently results in outstanding work, appreciated by many returning customers.
