HMS Argus I49 Aircraft Carrier Photo Print
HMS Argus (I49), a Royal Navy aircraft carrier, steams across a lightly rippled sea under a flat grey sky in this undated black and white view of her starboard side. With no island at all, her flight deck runs as one unbroken platform from bow to stern, while a trail of dark smoke streams away over the stern and the White Ensign flies from a staff aft. Rows of angled fittings line the deck edge, and a handful of sailors can be made out on the flight deck near a small raised structure amidships.
Argus began life on the stocks at William Beardmore's yard at Dalmuir as the Italian liner Conte Rosso, and the Admiralty bought her during the First World War for conversion into a carrier. Completed in 1918, she became the first ship with a full-length, unobstructed flight deck on which wheeled aircraft could both take off and land. To keep the deck clear, her boiler smoke was carried aft through long ducts and released at the stern, which explains the smoke seen low over the water in this photograph.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
