HMS Bristol D23 Type 82 Destroyer Amsterdam 1973 Fireboat Photo Print
HMS Bristol (D23), a Royal Navy Type 82 destroyer, is welcomed into Amsterdam on 14 November 1973 by a harbour fireboat sending tall jets of water into the air ahead of her, seen from high above her starboard bow with a tug made fast forward. Across the water rise the great gantry crane and slipways of the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord, with a ferry at its pier and blocks of flats along the far shore.
Named after the city of Bristol and built by Swan Hunter, she commissioned in March 1973 as the first ship to take the Sea Dart area air defence missile to sea, a system later carried by the Type 42 destroyers and the Invincible Class carriers. From 1987 she sailed with the Dartmouth Training Squadron, taking young officers to sea, and after leaving that role she became a familiar sight moored at Whale Island in Portsmouth, where generations of sea cadets and naval trainees lived aboard. Her bell is now kept in the Lord Mayor’s Chapel in the city whose name she carried.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
