HMS Calypso D61 C Class Cruiser c1917 Photo Print
HMS Calypso (D61), a Royal Navy C Class cruiser, lies at a buoy in about 1917, seen from her starboard bow with her cable running down to the mooring buoy beneath the bow. She is in a plain grey finish with her tall tripod foremast and spotting top, two funnels and boats amidships, and a few of her crew can be seen aft, with a low shoreline behind her on the right.
Calypso was built by Hawthorn Leslie at Hebburn, launched in January 1917 and commissioned that June as one of the Caledon group of C Class light cruisers. At the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight on 17 November 1917 a German shell struck her bridge, killing everyone there including her captain. In 1922 she carried the exiled Greek royal family to safety, among them the infant Prince Philip, later Duke of Edinburgh, who was brought aboard in a cot made from an orange box. On 12 June 1940, two days after Italy entered the war, she was torpedoed south of Crete by the Italian submarine Alpino Bagnolini with the loss of 39 men, the first British warship sunk by the Italian Navy.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
