HMS Carlisle 1918 C Class Light Cruiser Vladivostok 1919 Photo Print
HMS Carlisle (1918), a Royal Navy C Class light cruiser, lies in Vladivostok harbour in 1919 during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War, seen broadside from her starboard side. Her high bow, tall foremast and two funnels stand out against hills dotted with buildings behind the harbour, with smoke drifting across the sky on the right.
Built by Fairfield at Govan and launched in July 1918, she was commissioned on Armistice Day, 11th November 1918, too late to see action in the First World War, and was sent out to China with the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron the following year. In March 1921 she rescued 221 survivors from the wrecked passenger ship Hong Moh, and her captain, Edward Evans, received a Board of Trade medal for the rescue. Rebuilt as an anti-aircraft cruiser in 1939 and 1940, she fought off Norway, Crete, Matapan and at both battles of Sirte, and was credited with eleven aircraft, the highest score of any anti-aircraft ship in the Royal Navy. Badly damaged by German dive bombers in October 1943, she was judged not worth repairing and ended her days as a base ship at Alexandria, where she was broken up.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
