HMS Caroline 1914 C Class Light Cruiser 1917 Photo Print
HMS Caroline (1914), a Royal Navy C Class light cruiser, is seen broadside from her starboard side in 1917 under a grey, hazy sky, with a wave from the photographer’s boat breaking across the foreground. Her three funnels and newly fitted tripod foremast stand out above a pale hull, with ship’s boats stowed amidships, a small boat alongside, men gathered on deck and ensigns flying at both masts.
Built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, she was launched in September 1914 and commissioned that December, joining the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow and fighting at Jutland in 1916 under Captain Henry Crooke. Her 1917 refit at Fairfield in Govan gave her the tripod foremast seen here and a centreline 6 inch gun. From 1924 she served in Belfast as headquarters and training ship for the Ulster Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and through the Second World War as the Royal Navy’s headquarters in the port, supporting Atlantic and Arctic convoy escorts. Decommissioned in 2011 as the second oldest ship in the fleet after HMS Victory, she is preserved as a museum ship in Belfast’s Alexandra Dock, the last surviving ship of the Battle of Jutland still afloat.

We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
