HMS Cockchafer 1915 Insect Class Gunboat 1916 to 1945 Photo Print
HMS Cockchafer (1915), a Royal Navy Insect Class gunboat, is under way in a choppy grey sea, seen broadside from her port side with her low, shallow-draught hull riding close to the water and an ensign flying at her stern. Her two tall funnels and single mast rise above a deck crowded with ventilators, boats and fittings, while a full-rigged sailing ship, a smaller sailing vessel and a steamer can be seen on the hazy horizon.
Built by Barclay Curle on the Clyde and launched in December 1915, she was one of the shallow-draught Insect Class gunboats designed for river work, and spent the First World War defending the south-east coast from Brightlingsea before serving on the Dvina River in North Russia in 1918 and 1919. From 1920 she patrolled the Yangtze on the China Station, and was caught up in the Wanhsien Incident of 1926. In the Second World War she helped land troops at Basra during the Anglo-Iraqi War of 1941, took part in the invasion of Iran, supported the Sicily landings in 1943 and went east again for operations in Burma, before being laid up at Singapore and broken up there in 1949, the last of her class.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
