HMS Magicienne 1890 Marathon Class Cruiser 1899 Starboard View Photo Print
HMS Magicienne, a Marathon Class cruiser, is under way in this photograph, showing her full length from the starboard beam with a thin bow wave at the stem and smoke trailing from her after funnel. A small White Ensign flies from the gaff on her after mast, two black cones are hoisted below it, and a handful of men stand about the bridge and boat deck. The water is choppy and the sky hazy, so that only a low shoreline and a tall shore mast show behind her.
Her best remembered moment came in the Second Boer War. On 28 December 1899 she stopped the German mail steamer Bundesrath in Delagoa Bay, in neutral Portuguese territory, on suspicion that she was carrying men and war material for the Boers, and sent her into Durban under escort. Nothing was found aboard and the steamer was let go, but the affair grew into a serious diplomatic quarrel between London and Berlin. Magicienne herself was sold out of the service in 1905.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
