HMS Matapan D43 Battle Class Destroyer 1975 Underway Photo Print
HMS Matapan (D43), a Royal Navy Battle Class destroyer, runs close inshore in 1975, photographed from the air on her starboard bow, with a line of low cliffs and rising ground across the background. In this monochrome aerial she pushes up a heavy bow wave, an ensign flying at her after end, the pennant number D43 painted on her side and the long bare forecastle stretching forward of her square deckhouse.
In 1970 Matapan was picked to take over from HMS Verulam as the Royal Navy's sonar trials ship, and on 5 January that year she was towed to Portsmouth to be rebuilt for the work. Her armament came out, and in its place she was given a deckhouse and covered bridge forward, a plated foremast carrying extra radars, a second funnel, a flight deck aft and a deep skeg beneath the keel holding sonar arrays 150 feet long. The reconstruction finished in July 1972 and left her looking almost nothing like the rest of her class.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
