HMS Porpoise N14 Grampus Class Submarine 1932 to 1945 Photo Print
HMS Porpoise (N14) lies low on a flat, hazy sea in this undated view from her interwar and wartime years, seen broadside on, the port side of the hull towards the camera. The long flat casing running aft from her small bridge held the mine stowage her class was built around, and a jumping wire sweeps forward from the bridge structure down to the bow. There is no bow wave and the water around her is undisturbed, so she is stopped or barely moving.
Porpoise was the first of six purpose built mine layers ordered for the Submarine Service between the wars, launched on 30 August 1932 and carrying fifty mines on a conveyor inside her casing rather than firing them from her torpedo tubes. That large internal volume gave her a second career in 1941 and 1942 as an underwater supply boat, running fuel, ammunition and stores into Malta when surface convoys could not get through. She was lost with all hands off Penang on 19 January 1945, bombed by Japanese aircraft shortly after she had signalled that her last minefield was laid, the final Royal Navy submarine lost to enemy action.

Framing & Mounting
We provide a bright white mount as standard. If you prefer an alternative colour, please contact us. Depending on the print's size and orientation, we may occasionally need to adjust the mount's size or shape to ensure the best presentation.
Our frame selection is extensive, and due to website limitations not every style can be listed. If you have a particular colour or design in mind, please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss available options.
The final frame size and proportions may vary slightly based on the image ratio. Occasionally, frames may need to be a little taller or wider than the chosen size; however, they will never be smaller than the specified dimensions.
